The 12 Chinese Zodiac Months and the Animals That Rule Them

The zodiac animals are usually met as a year system. That is only one of their jobs. The same twelve animals also label the twelve months of the lunar year, a parallel layer that runs on the earthly branches.

The twelve months

The month cycle begins with the tiger, which covers the first lunar month. It then follows the same order as the year cycle:

Lunar monthBranchAnimal
1stYinTiger
2ndMaoRabbit
3rdChenDragon
4thSiSnake
5thWuHorse
6thWeiGoat
7thShenMonkey
8thYouRooster
9thXuDog
10thHaiPig
11thZiRat
12thChouOx

Why it starts with the tiger

This is the part that trips people up. The year cycle starts with the rat, but the month cycle starts with the tiger.

The reason is that the two cycles are anchored differently. The year cycle is anchored to the rat branch, which is tied to the depths of winter and the turning point of the year. The month cycle is anchored to the beginning of spring and the start of the farming season. In the traditional calendar the first month is built on the tiger branch, Yin, which corresponds to early spring. The rat month, Zi, falls near the winter solstice, in the eleventh position, not the first.

So the rat leads the years, and the tiger leads the months. Same twelve animals, two different starting points.

A detail that matters for birth charts

The month labels above are ideal boundaries, not calendar dates. In a real four pillar chart the month pillar does not flip on the first day of each lunar month. It flips on the solar term that opens each month, such as Start of Spring. That means a birth in the first days of a lunar month can still belong to the previous month branch, depending on where the solar term falls.

This is why a full chart needs more than a birth year and more than a birth date. It needs the exact timing of the solar terms.

What the month layer is used for

The month branch is the second of the four pillars in a traditional chart, sitting between the year pillar and the day pillar. It is read together with the others to describe the season a person was born into, which is understood as a shaping influence.

If you want the year layer, your animal and element, the free report at eastzodiacmatch.xyz/en/report/ calculates it on load. It is year pillar level, so it will not produce your month pillar, but it is a clean first step.

FAQ

What are the 12 Chinese zodiac months?

Twelve lunar months, each tied to one animal and one earthly branch. The first month is the tiger, and the sequence follows the standard animal order around to the ox in the twelfth month.

Why does the month cycle start with the tiger and not the rat?

Because the month cycle is anchored to the start of spring and the farming year, which falls on the tiger branch, Yin. The rat branch is tied to midwinter and sits in the eleventh month.

How are the zodiac months used?

Mainly in four pillar charts, where the month branch becomes the month pillar. It is also used in traditional timing and in reading classical texts that date events by month branch.
