What Is the Sixty Year Cycle: Why the Same Zodiac Has Different Elements

What Is the Sixty Year Cycle: Why the Same Zodiac Has Different Elements

You may have noticed that two people born in the Year of the Rat are described with different elements. One is a Water Rat, another a Fire Rat. The difference does not come from the animal. It comes from the sixty year stem branch cycle, known as ganzhi.

What are the heavenly stems and earthly branches

The heavenly stems are ten: Jia, Yi, Bing, Ding, Wu, Ji, Geng, Xin, Ren, Gui. The earthly branches are twelve, and they double as the zodiac animals: Zi (Rat), Chou (Ox), Yin (Tiger), Mao (Rabbit), Chen (Dragon), Si (Snake), Wu (Horse), Wei (Goat), Shen (Monkey), You (Rooster), Xu (Dog), Hai (Pig).

A year is named by pairing one stem with one branch. The stems run ten at a time, the branches twelve at a time. The two sequences lock together and only line up again after sixty pairings. That is the sixty year cycle.

How the cycle repeats

Stem one pairs with branch one, then both advance by one each year. Because ten and twelve share a common factor of two, the same stem branch pair returns every sixty years.

A few examples:

  • 1972: Ren Zi, Water Rat
  • 1984: Jia Zi, Wood Rat
  • 1996: Bing Zi, Fire Rat
  • 2026: Bing Wu, Fire Horse

Note that 1972, 1984, and 1996 are all Rat years, yet the stem changes, so the element changes.

Why the same animal changes element

The element comes from the heavenly stem, not the animal. The stem to element mapping is fixed:

  • Jia, Yi: Wood
  • Bing, Ding: Fire
  • Wu, Ji: Earth
  • Geng, Xin: Metal
  • Ren, Gui: Water

So 1996 is Bing Zi. Bing maps to Fire, and Zi is Rat, giving Fire Rat. 1972 is Ren Zi. Ren maps to Water, so it is Water Rat. Same animal, different stem, different element.

What the year pillar element means

The year pillar is the first of the four pillars in Ba Zi. It speaks to the surface level traits tied to your birth year. Two Fire Rats from different decades share the animal and the Fire element, but their full charts differ in month, day, and hour.

For a quick reading, the year pillar element is enough to explain why one Rat is called Water and another Fire.

How to check your own

You do not need to memorize the cycle. Open the free zodiac report page, enter your birth year, and it shows your stem, branch, and pillar element directly.

The birth year lookup tool on the homepage also maps your year to a zodiac sign if you only want the animal.

FAQ

Is the sixty year cycle the same as the zodiac

No. The zodiac is the twelve animals. The sixty year cycle pairs each animal with a stem, giving sixty named years instead of twelve.

Does the element change every year

The animal changes every year as the branches rotate. The element changes every time the stem rotates, which is every year too, but it lines up with the same animal only every sixty years.

Can two Rat years share an element

Yes, if they are sixty years apart, like 1936 and 1996, both Bing Zi, Fire Rat. Within one sixty year round, each animal meets each of five elements exactly once.

Where can I see my own pillar
